Since 2023, new personal Google Play developer accounts must run a closed test before they can apply for production access. Miss any part of it and the clock restarts.

Testers Minimum

At least twelve people must be opted in to your closed test — not twelve installs, twelve distinct opted-in testers.

Q1 How many testers does Google Play require?
For a personal Google Play developer account you need at least 12 testers opted in to your closed test continuously for 14 days before you can apply for production access. If a tester opts out, the count drops and your clock is affected, which is why keeping testers engaged matters as much as recruiting them.
Q2 Is AppLab free to use?
Yes. Submitting an app, joining a Lab as a tester, filing feedback and earning points are all free. AppLab runs on a give-to-get model: you test other people’s apps to earn points, and those points bring testers to your own app.
Q3 How does AppLab stop fake or inactive testers?
Testers have 14 days to join a test and submit real feedback. Inactive testers are removed and lose 30 points. Labs can also vote to remove a member who never actually installed the app, and developers get a compliance view showing exactly who is still opted in.
Q4 Do I need to upload my APK to AppLab?
No, and it is usually better not to. The recommended flow is to paste your Google Play closed testing opt-in link, so testers join through Play exactly the way Google counts. Uploading an APK is optional for early builds that are not on Play yet.
Q5 How long does it take to get 12 testers?
It depends on how many points you have and how appealing your app is, but an active submission with points to spend usually fills within a few days. Testing other apps first is the fastest way to build the points that attract testers to yours.
Q6 What kind of feedback will I get?
Structured bug reports and feature requests with a severity level, a written description and optional screenshots. You can reply in a thread, change a report’s status, and testers can upvote issues so the ones that matter most rise to the top.
