Most Wi-Fi complaints are not really about Wi-Fi. They are about one router sat in the corner of a hallway, behind a meter cupboard, trying to cover a house it was never going to cover. Adding a faster broadband package to that does nothing — the bottleneck is not the line, it is what happens to the signal after it leaves the box.

I survey the building first, find where the signal actually dies, and put access points where they will do some good. Then I separate the network properly, so your work laptop is not sharing a flat network with a smart plug and a guest's phone. The result is a network you stop thinking about, which is the only real measure of a good one.

A proper site survey to find the dead spots, then access points positioned and channel-planned around your building — not guessed at. Thick walls, awkward extensions and long gardens all get accounted for.

Networks Kept Apart

VLANs that put work devices, smart home gear and guests on separate networks. If the cheap IoT plug you bought turns out to be a liability, it cannot see anything that matters.

Wired Where It Counts

Managed PoE switches so cameras, access points and desk machines run off one cable each. Anything that sits still and matters is better off wired, and it takes load off the Wi-Fi for everything else.

Guest Access Done Right

A separate guest network with its own password, a splash page and terms if you want them, and bandwidth limits so one visitor streaming films does not flatten the connection for everyone else.

Fixing What Is There

You do not always need new kit. Often a network that keeps dropping is a failing power supply, a duplicated DHCP server or two routers quietly fighting each other. I will find the cause before recommending hardware.

Kept Running Afterwards

Firmware updates, health monitoring and someone to ring when something changes. One dashboard shows the whole network, and I will show you how to read it rather than leaving you dependent on me.

Why I Build on UniFi

UniFi gives a house or a small office the same tooling a large company gets — VLANs, proper monitoring, controlled guest access — without the enterprise price tag or a licensing contract. Just as importantly, it is manageable by you once I have gone. One dashboard, in plain English, that shows what is connected and what is misbehaving.

My Go-To Gear

What I actually specify, based on real jobs rather than a catalogue:

Home / small office: a U6-Lite access point, a Dream Router and an 8-port PoE switch if anything needs wiring. Affordable and genuinely easy to manage.
Bigger office: U6-Pro APs for the extra range and client count, Pro-series switches, and a Dream Machine Pro to drive it.
Growing fast: managed PoE switches with headroom, APs placed for the building you will have in two years, and redundancy so one failure is not an outage.

Questions I Get Asked

My Wi-Fi is slow. Will faster broadband fix it?

Usually not, and this is the most common money wasted on the problem. If you are getting the speed you pay for at the router but not in the back bedroom, the line is fine and the coverage is not — upgrading the package changes nothing. It is worth measuring both before you commit to a more expensive contract, and that is a quick job.

Do I need UniFi, or will a mesh kit from a shop do?

For a lot of homes a decent mesh kit is genuinely fine, and I will say so rather than sell you something bigger. UniFi earns its place when you need real separation between devices, more than about three access points, guest access with limits, or the ability to see what is actually happening on the network. Below that, simpler is better.

What does a network job cost?

The call out is £30, which covers coming to look and surveying the building. Beyond that it depends entirely on the hardware and how much cabling is involved, so you get an itemised price for kit and labour before anything is ordered. A single access point to fix one dead zone is a small job; a multi-VLAN office rebuild is not, and I would rather you saw the difference up front.

Will you need to run cables through my house?

Where it is practical, yes, because a wired access point beats a wireless one every time. But I will tell you honestly what is involved before anything is drilled, and where running a cable would mean real disruption I will say so and we will look at the alternatives. Nothing gets routed through your walls as a surprise.

Can you separate my work devices from the smart home gear?

Yes, and it is one of the most worthwhile things you can do. Cheap smart plugs, cameras and TVs are the least maintained devices on most networks. Putting them on their own VLAN means that if one is compromised it cannot see your work laptop, your NAS or anything else worth reaching.

Can you work outside office hours so we do not lose a day?

For a business that is usually the sensible option, and it is why I keep evening and weekend availability. Anything that takes the network down — a controller migration, re-cabling a rack, moving devices onto new VLANs — can happen when nobody is trying to work through it.

What happens after it is installed?

You get shown how the dashboard works, because a network you cannot see into is one you are dependent on someone else for. After that I can keep firmware current and monitor health on an ongoing basis if you want, but there is no contract and nothing obliges you to. Plenty of people call once a year and that is fine.
