A broken laptop screen is one of the few faults that looks catastrophic and usually is not. The panel is a separate part that unclips from the lid, so in most cases the machine underneath is perfectly healthy — your files, your programs and your settings are all still there, waiting behind a sheet of broken glass.

The honest catch is that the part, not the labour, is what decides the price. A common 15.6 inch panel is inexpensive; a high resolution, touch or OLED one is not. That is why I will not quote a flat figure over the phone without knowing your model — anyone who does is either guessing or planning to revise it later. Tell me the make and model and you will get a real number before anything is ordered.

Screen Faults I See Most

Cracked or Smashed Glass

Dropped, sat on, or closed on a pen — the classic. Spidered cracks, ink-like black blooms and bleeding colour all mean the panel itself is finished. The good news is that this is the most straightforward version of the job.

Vertical Lines & Colour Bands

Coloured stripes down the display, or a band that changes as you move the lid. Usually a failing panel or a ribbon cable that has worked loose at the hinge. The lid test tells us which, and only one of the two needs a new screen.

Very Dim or Dark Screen

Picture is there if you shine a torch at it, but the backlight has gone. Worth checking properly, because on some machines this is the panel and on others it is a cheaper part behind it. I check before I quote.

Black Screen, Machine Running

Fans spinning, lights on, nothing visible. This is the one most often misdiagnosed as a screen. Plugging into an external monitor separates a dead panel from a graphics or boot problem in about a minute, and saves you buying a part you did not need.

Flickering & Ghosting

Flicker that changes with the lid angle is nearly always the cable rather than the panel — a much smaller job. Flicker that stays constant regardless of position usually means the panel is on its way out.

Broken Hinges Taking the Screen With Them

A hinge that has seized and started cracking the lid casing will destroy a new panel too if it is not sorted at the same time. If I find this, I will tell you before fitting a screen into a lid that is going to break it.

How the Job Actually Goes

You tell me the make and model — it is on a sticker underneath, or I can find it from the machine. I confirm the fault is genuinely the panel, usually with an external monitor test, then identify the exact panel your model takes. You get a single price covering part and labour before anything is ordered. Once the part lands, fitting is normally under an hour, and I test the new panel properly before it goes back to you. If the diagnosis shows the screen was never the problem, you have paid the £25 diagnostic and nothing more.

Questions I Get Asked

How much does a laptop screen replacement cost in Taunton?
It depends almost entirely on the panel, which is why nobody honest can quote you a single figure over the phone without knowing the model. A common 15.6 inch HD panel is one of the cheaper parts; a high resolution, touch or OLED panel costs considerably more. Tell me the make and model number and I will price the part and the labour together before you commit to anything.
My screen is cracked but the laptop still works on an external monitor. Is it worth fixing?
That is actually the best case, because it tells us the fault is the panel and not the graphics hardware or the motherboard. If the rest of the machine is healthy and not too old, a new panel is usually far cheaper than replacing the laptop. If the machine is already struggling for other reasons I will say so rather than sell you a screen for something on its way out.
How long does the repair take?
The fitting itself is usually under an hour. The wait is the part. Common panels arrive next day, unusual ones can take longer. Realistically most screen jobs are done one to three working days after you bring the laptop in, and I will give you the actual expected date once I have identified the panel rather than a hopeful guess.
My screen is black but I can hear the laptop running. Is that the screen?
Not necessarily, and this is worth checking before you pay for a panel. A black screen can be the panel, the backlight, the ribbon cable, the graphics chip or simply a machine that is not booting at all. Plugging into an external monitor usually settles it in a minute. I do that check before quoting, so you are not charged for a screen that was never the problem.
Will I lose my files?
No. A screen replacement does not touch the drive or your data at all. The panel is a separate part from the storage, so your files, photos and programs are exactly where you left them when you get the machine back.
Do you replace screens on MacBooks and tablets too?
Windows laptops and Chromebooks are straightforward. MacBook panels are often bonded into the lid assembly, which makes the part much more expensive and the job much bigger, so I will be upfront about whether it makes financial sense. Tablet and phone screens I do not take on, and I will tell you rather than experiment on your device.
Can you come to me, or do I need to bring it in?
Screen work is bench work. It needs a clean, flat, well lit surface and no risk of a dropped bezel clip disappearing into a carpet, so I would rather do it at my bench in Taunton than on a kitchen table. I can collect and drop back if getting to me is awkward.
