Wellington sits about seven miles down the A38 from my base in Taunton, which makes it close enough that I treat it as home turf — the call out is £25, the same as anywhere else I cover, with nothing added for the distance. If your laptop has stopped booting, your desktop has slowed to a crawl, or something has gone wrong that you would rather not hand to a national chain, I can usually get to you within a day or two.

I am a one-person operation, which has one obvious downside and one big advantage. The downside is that I cannot always be there the same hour you call. The advantage is that the person who answers the phone is the person who does the work, so nothing gets lost in a handover and you are not upsold by someone working to a target.

Common Jobs in the Wellington Area

SSD Upgrades for Older Laptops

Easily the most common request, and the one that gives the biggest improvement for the money. If your machine takes minutes to reach the desktop, a solid state drive plus a clean Windows install will transform it. Your files and programs come across with it.

Virus & Scam Popup Removal

Fake "your computer is infected, call this number" warnings are still doing the rounds. I will clear the infection, check nothing was installed behind it, and — if you did speak to anyone — help you work out what needs changing.

Laptop Won't Power On

Sometimes it is a failed charger, sometimes a power jack that has been knocked, sometimes the board. I will tell you which before you spend anything, and I will tell you plainly if the machine is not worth repairing.

Data Recovery

Photos on a drive that has stopped being recognised, or documents lost after a Windows problem. If the drive still spins there is usually a good chance. Stop using the machine and call — continuing to use it is what actually loses the data.

Broadband & Wi-Fi Dead Spots

Wellington has a lot of older, thick-walled housing that plays badly with a single router. Often the fix is repositioning or a mesh setup rather than a faster package from your provider.

New PC Setup & Data Transfer

Bought a replacement and want everything moved across properly — files, email, printers, browser bookmarks and passwords — without losing anything from the old machine.

Questions I Get Asked

Do you charge a callout fee to come to Wellington?
Yes, £25. Wellington is about seven miles from my base in Taunton, and the call out is the same £25 as anywhere else I cover, with nothing extra added for the distance. That £25 is charged whether or not you go ahead with the repair, and you get a price for any repair work before it starts.
Which villages around Wellington do you cover?
The whole TA21 area, including Rockwell Green, West Buckland, Nynehead, Sampford Arundel, Langford Budville, Thorne St Margaret and Milverton. If you are further out towards the Blackdown Hills, get in touch anyway and I will tell you honestly whether the trip is practical.
Can you collect the computer rather than repairing it at my house?
Yes. Some jobs, such as a full Windows reinstall or a data recovery attempt, take longer than is practical in your home. I can collect the machine from your Wellington address, do the work at my bench in Taunton, and drop it back once it has been tested.
How long will a repair take?
Most jobs are one to three working days. Anything that needs a part ordering depends on delivery time. I will give you a realistic estimate once I have seen the machine rather than an optimistic one, and I will tell you if something is going to take longer than expected.
Will I lose my files or photos?
A normal repair does not touch your files, and an SSD upgrade copies everything across to the new drive. If a job would mean wiping the machine I will say so first and give you the choice. Recovering files from a drive that has already failed is a different job, and worth calling about as soon as you notice.
My laptop is slow but not broken. Is that worth fixing?
Usually yes, and usually cheaply. Most laptops that feel unusably slow are still running a mechanical hard drive. Swapping it for an SSD and moving your files across typically costs well under the price of a replacement machine and makes a five or six year old laptop feel new again.
What if it turns out not to be worth repairing?
Then I will tell you. If the repair cost gets close to the price of a better replacement machine, that is what I will say rather than quietly doing the work anyway. I can also help you choose a replacement and move everything across from the old one.
